Antoine Le-Coultre (1803- 1881), being the son of a black smith, was born into the lifestyle of craftsman. From a young age, he was fascinated by measuring time and watchmaking, eventually provoking him to turn the family farm into a small watchmaking studio.
After intense and consistent research, Le-Coultre invented the revolutionary milionometer, an invention which permitted measurements of up to a thousandth of a millimeter. Not only did this enable greater accuracy, but in turn, it allowed “the design of smaller lighter watches”. In 1847, Le-Coultre also created a new system to wind watches, which didn’t require keys for rewinding and setting watches.
The business remained within the family, passing onto Antoine’s son Elie Le-Coultre (1842-1917), and then onto Antoine’s grandson, Jacques-David Le-Coultre (1875-1948). It was under Jacques-David’s control in 1903 when Paris watchmaker, Edmond Jaeger, dared Swiss watch manufacturers to produce the ultra-thin movements he invented. With Jacques-David Le-Coultre accepting this challenge and going on to use the ultra-thin movements in their watches, the company then became known as Jaeger-LeCoultre.
The company has continued their pioneering approach to the designs of their watches. In 1931, responding to the needs of British officers who played polo in India, Jaeger-LeCoultre created their now iconic Reverso watch. The face of the watch can be ‘reversed’, revealing a plain surface, that provided a shield to protect the watches face, when the men were playing and their watches were vulnerable.
Jaeger-LeCoultre has also demonstrated their appreciation of film. Since 2007, they have been enjoying a relationship with the film industry, being the official partner of the Venice International Film Festival. Jaeger-LeCoultre also has a partnership with the Shanghai International Film Festival, in which the funds it provides the Film Festival with go towards restoring old Chinese movies, and in turn preserves the countries cinematographic heritage.
