Reasons To Buy Second Hand Rolex!
It has been said “Rolex is one of the biggest, most trusted and value keeping watch brand ever made. One can never go wrong buying a Rolex watch.” Is that a true statement? The answer is yes! But there is a big catch. Yes, you cannot go wrong by buying a Rolex watch however at the right price. I have been successfully dealing with second hand Rolex watches for many years and I am known as one of the most trusted dealer/watch collector in the trade.
Through out 30 years of trading, I picked up a sense to spotting a good deal and it hurts to see more and more people heading towards the new discounted watches. Here is my explanation to why I say that: When you buy a new Rolex watch it depreciates in value as soon as you strap it on your wrist. What most people forget is that when you buy a new Rolex watch, you automatically lose the 20% VAT that you paid plus the sellers profit margin. In most cases, buying a new Rolex watch means you are losing around 50% of what you paid as soon as you walk out of the shop. Now if you think to your self (was the person behind the counter along with the coffee they offered at the authorised dealership worth the automatic 50% loss?).
Some people ask me, “is it safe to buy second hand Rolex watches? Wouldn’t it be a lot better if I buy new? At least I know that the watch has been serviced right and that the watch is in perfect condition”. I can assure you it is 100% safe to buy second hand Rolex watches and when you buy from a reputable dealer, they will guarantee the watch’s authenticity and give you a warranty with it. A Rolex should never be judged by its age but by its condition, as most of our vintage watches are in a better condition than some of the 2015-2016 Rolex watches that we get offered. If you are buying the watch for investment, you have to make sure you are paying the right money for the watch and the retail price is definitely not the right money for investment purposes. Although price list is going up every year however if you buy new, you will notice the depreciation in the value of your new Rolex before it picks back up as you have just lost a whole chunk of money due to wearing the new watch however if you buy a second hand Rolex, that watch has already been through the cycle of depreciation due to losing the “new watch” element then it picks it self back up and as the list price goes up, the second hand price goes up relatively with it.
I sometimes have customers asking why we have some watches without papers. I truly believe that the word papers is misused as the original paper/card that comes with a Rolex watch is only the warranty that the watch came with and after it expires, it doesn’t mean much. Although when selling your Rolex you get a little more money if you have the original papers however you also pay that little more when you purchase it in the first place. I am not saying that papers are not important however what I am saying is that people assume that papers with a watch is like a logbook with a car (a must have). All that matters to guarantee the authenticity of the watch is the invoice given to you by a reputable watch dealer and it will also prove that you are the rightful owner of the watch. Should their be anything wrong with the watches history or the authenticity of the watch, any reputable watch dealer should offer you your money back right away. I cannot stress it enough that papers don’t guarantee the authenticity of your watch as its easier to fake a piece of paper than faking the actual watch itself. What guarantees the authenticity of your watch is the watch dealer that you are buying your Rolex from, make sure you check them out, see if they have any feedback on their website or on any other platform they are on like eBay.
At the end of the day, your Rolex watch is only worth what you can cash it up for. If you but at a new price, when you come to sell it you will have to sell it for a second hand price and if you buy second hand then you will get around the same money you paid or even make money as it was already second hand.
