Rolex History

Founded as Wilsdorf and Davis in 1905 by watchmakers Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis, its subsequent transformation into the now world-renowned name Rolex in 1908 set the ground for its reign in the watch arena. The name reflected its uniqueness and specialty on the market, and the image of the Rolex Crown on the front of their boxes and the dials of their watches serve as a constant reminder of its regal status. This renowned image is evident in the household status of the name and was reinforced by the Forbes 2014 list of the world’s most powerful global brands, which ranked Rolex at No.72.
It was the innovations of Rolex that helped establish it as the high-end luxury brand that we know today and has infiltrated the watch manufacturing market leaving a lasting presence that is hard to imagine the market without now. In 1927 they launched the Rolex Oyster, which was the first waterproof watch. The media attention given to Rolex’s creation was amplified tenfold when a Brighton native wore it as she swam across the English Channel; her and Rolex’s plunge proved successful when she returned from the deep sea with the Rolex Oyster, still in tact and as impenetrable as an oyster. This event solidified the world-renowned Rolex name.
Then in 1931 the Rolex Perpetual was created and its design now powers every automatic watch. Its longer power reserves and more accurate timing made it the perfect replacement to the complex and imperfect designs that were being used before its entrance onto the market.
Again in 1945 the creation of the Rolex Datejust put Rolex at the top of the game with the innovative idea of a self-changing date. Similarly a self-changing day was later added in the Rolex Day-Date in 1956.
The reason Rolex is such a world-class brand is because it pushes not only innovative boundaries but also environmental ones. For instance, the Rolex Submariner which functions 330 feet under water, the Rolex Deepsea which once travelled 35,814 feet underwater, the Rolex Explorer which sustains use at the peak of Mount Everest and last but not least the incredible Rolex GMT-Master which was taken to the moon. Its sturdiness in these harsh and extreme environments mirrors its sustainability and presence in the watch market for over a century.
Like the (journey of the) Rolex GMT-Master, the Rolex brand is up there amongst the stars and not from planet earth. This unique brand has managed to sustain its relevance throughout time and societies ever-changing environments, remaining at the forefront of advancement ever since its rising publicity in the early 20th century, and we have no doubt that it will stay there in the predicted future.
